Nungua Tigers RLFC holds down defending Champions
Nungua Tigers RLFC put up a good show in their recent match against Ghana Skolars which came off on the 20th of June 2021 at the Legon Field. The game ended in a 10 all draw scoreline.
This comes off as a massive improvement by Nungua Tigers after losing 26-0 to Ghana Skolars in a 9 vs 13 handicap game; with the more numbers favoring Skolars during the first round of the Ghana Rugby League Championship .
Nungua Tigers RLFC is a Rugby League Football Club based in Nungua-Accra.They are the only Community based team in the championship.The Club was established in September 2020, after the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions were eased in Ghana.
The Club seeks to make Rugby League a dominant sport in Ghana while helping surrounding communities with both on and off field activities.
The 2021 Ghana Rugby League Championship is the first 13's championship tournament this nouvelle club has participated in.
Speaking to some pivotal personnel of the club, this is what they had to say:
Oliver Puman (President & Captain, Nungua Tigers RLFC):
The game against Skolars was impressive. Our performance was much better than it was in previous matches. Here at Tigers , we have one philosophy; improving on our performance each and every time. Winning the cup is not our focus as of now; but when the win comes, we will be very excited.
He also remarked;
Our fans and the general public should expect the best from us. We have the numbers we badly needed in our debut match now and thus, working on diverse formations to develop a particular style of play which will be associated with the club.In our next match against bulls RLFC, we are hoping to play better than what we played against skolars.
Ed K. E. Akwetey (Communications Director, Nungua Tigers RLFC) also shared his thoughts on their recent match against Ghana Skolars RLC.
We came in with a well defined game plan that suited the kind of players we have and we executed as a team. We believe there's no "I" in team and we don't play "hero" on the field.Honestly, i believe we should've had the win despite being plagued with injuries. But all things considered, it was a nice aggressive game. We need to work more on our defense and sharpen our attacking skills.
He added;
The public should expect massive wins all the way. In our very first match, we played with the lesser numbers because we didn't have the personnel and lost. We quickly beefed up our numbers and should've had the win in our second match against Bulls RLFC if we hadn't messed up the last play at the Bulls try line which cost us to lose by 2 points. But that's the game of Rugby, you win some and you lose others.We have the drive and grit to win it all.
Rosemary Sewornu (Team Manager, Nungua Tigers RLFC) had this to say;
In our match against Ghana Skolars, we were actually prepared for a win. Because we came in with our all. Initially, we didn't have a game plan or strategy so after the first round of the championship, we went back, sat down , did our homework and came up with a strategy which led to the improvement in our performance.I believe our next match is going to be better than yesterday's match and we will definitely put in our best.
Emmanuel D. Akuklu (Coach Deka) who is the Head Coach of Nungua Tigers RLFC remarked;
We resolved to play the game 'our way' and the result was evident of the resolve.
Rugby league is a beautiful sport that must be seen, played and promoted. This is what we, Nungua Tigers RLFC bring to you. Let's discover more together.
The club is also very pleased and appreciative of the support coming in from their partner club, Hindpool Tigers ARLFC. They hope to meet them in the nearest future.
